The two speaking apps
IELTS Speaking Test and Accent Test both listen to you speak and both hand back a number, but they are
answering different questions and it is worth being clear which one you have.
- IELTS Speaking Test is for a deadline. There is an exam, there
is a band you need, and the useful output is a breakdown of which of the four
criteria is holding your overall score down. It runs the real timings - one
minute of preparation before the Part 2 long turn, 45-second TOEFL interview
answers with no preparation at all - and it marks up your transcript so the
marks attach to specific moments rather than to the answer as a whole.
- Accent Test has no exam behind it. It ranks your voice across
sixteen accents of world English and shows you the specific sounds that gave
each one away. People open it out of curiosity and stay for the daily
challenge, which is a different kind of practice: perception before
production.
If you are preparing for a test, start with the first. If you want to sound less
like a textbook and more like a person from somewhere, the second is the one that
trains your ear.
Why the scoring runs on the phone
A recording of someone speaking is biometric data under a fair number of
legal frameworks. An exam answer is usually also a candid account of your own life -
Part 1 asks about your home, your family and your work, and Part 2 asks you to
describe something that happened to you. Uploading that to be marked is a poor trade
for feedback.
Both apps turn speech into text on the device and score it there. Neither needs a
connection, neither asks for an account, and the simplest way to check either claim is
to switch the network off and use them.
The practical benefit is not only privacy. Practice that works on a plane, on the
underground or in a room with poor reception is practice that actually happens. If you

One thing a day, kept
Learn Daily works on the opposite scale from a course. There is

orbital mechanics and reading element sets through real missions, debris and signals to
