When to convert JPG to PNG

    • A form, app or print service only accepts PNG.
    • You will edit the image repeatedly - PNG does not lose more quality each time it is saved, JPG does.
    • You want to add transparency later in an editor.

Converting does not bring back detail the JPG already lost, and the PNG will be larger - typically 3-6 times for a photo. That is normal for a lossless format.

    Making the PNG smaller

Tick Palette PNG to reduce the image to 256 colours. That suits logos, screenshots and graphics saved as JPG, and makes the PNG a fraction of the size. For photos, keep it off to preserve smooth gradients.

How to convert JPG to PNG

    1. Drop your images onto the box above, click it to choose them, or paste a screenshot.
    2. Check the settings. They are already set for this task, and you can change any of them.
    3. Download each image, or all of them at once as a ZIP. Click a thumbnail to compare before and after.

Images are processed as soon as you add them. Change a setting and press Apply to all again to redo the batch.

    How your files stay private

Most free converters upload your file, process it on their server and send the result back - so a copy of it passes through somebody else's machine. This page does all of the work in your browser instead. The files you choose are read into memory on your own device, processed there and handed back as a download; none of their contents is transmitted. You can switch off Wi-Fi after the page has loaded and it keeps working.

    Frequently asked questions

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG keeps exactly what is in the JPG, including its compression artefacts. It only stops further quality loss from future edits.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, while JPG discards detail to save space. A photo as PNG is normally several times larger than as JPG.

Can I make the background transparent?

Converting keeps the JPG's background, because JPG has no transparency to carry over. You can remove the background afterwards in an image editor, and the PNG will store it.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
