    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is about half the size of JPG at the same quality, so websites and some phones now use it. Browsers display it, but many photo viewers, editors, Office apps and upload forms do not accept it yet.

    JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos - small and universally supported. Switch Save as to PNG for images with transparency or sharp graphics.

Your browser needs to be able to read AVIF to convert it: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4+ all can.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

    1. Drop your images onto the box above, click it to choose them, or paste a screenshot.
    2. Check the settings. They are already set for this task, and you can change any of them.
    3. Download each image, or all of them at once as a ZIP. Click a thumbnail to compare before and after.

Images are processed as soon as you add them. Change a setting and press Apply to all again to redo the batch.

    How your files stay private

Most free converters upload your file, process it on their server and send the result back - so a copy of it passes through somebody else's machine. This page does all of the work in your browser instead. The files you choose are read into memory on your own device, processed there and handed back as a download; none of their contents is transmitted. You can switch off Wi-Fi after the page has loaded and it keeps working.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my AVIF file not open?

Older software does not include an AVIF decoder. Converting to JPG gives you a file every app opens.

    Will the JPG be bigger?

Usually yes - AVIF compresses about twice as well as JPG, so the same image takes more space as JPG.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. The browser decodes the AVIF and the JPG is encoded on your device.
