Ambient apps look interchangeable in a grid of thumbnails and behave very differently once they are running for three hours in a real living room. Two things decide it.

Motion. Fire, water and fish move constantly but unpredictably, which reads as alive without demanding attention - Cozy Fireplace, Live Aquarium and Sunset sit here. Kaleidoscope moves deliberately and holds the eye, which is what you want at a party and not what you want behind a conversation. Art Gallery and Night Sky barely move at all and work closest to a picture on the wall.

Brightness. A sunset or a fireplace fills a room with warm light and works in daylight. Night Sky is mostly dark and is wasted in a bright room but excellent in the evening. Exotic Animals and Northern Lights sit between the two.

Why not just use the built-in screensaver

Apple TV's own aerial screensavers are excellent and also finite, non- interactive, and only appear when the device decides you have stopped. An ambient app is something you choose and leave running: you pick the scene, you control the sound, and it does not disappear the moment someone picks up the remote.
