What EXIF data reveals
| Field | What it can give away |
|---|---|
| GPS position | Where you live, work or travel - often accurate to a few metres. |
| Date and time | When you were there, down to the second, sometimes with your time zone. |
| Camera and lens | Your phone model, and on many cameras the body and lens serial numbers. |
| Software and owner | Editing apps, computer name, author and copyright fields. |
| Embedded thumbnail | A small copy of the original - which may still show what you cropped out. |
Most social networks strip this when you post, but email, messengers that send "files", cloud links, marketplaces and forums often pass it on untouched.
How the removal works
For JPG, PNG and WebP the metadata blocks are cut out of the file and the image data is copied byte for byte - there is no re-compression and no quality loss. The colour profile is kept so colours do not shift, and if the photo needs rotating, a single orientation tag is kept so it still displays upright.
HEIC and AVIF files are converted to a clean JPG, because their containers cannot be rewritten safely in the browser. Every cleaned file is read back and checked, and the result is shown next to the original.
How to remove EXIF data
- Drop your photos onto the box above.
- They are cleaned straight away; open a photo to see exactly which fields were found.
- Download each clean photo, or all of them as a ZIP.
How your files stay private
Most free converters upload your file, process it on their server and send the result back - so a copy of it passes through somebody else's machine. This page does all of the work in your browser instead. The files you choose are read into memory on your own device, processed there and handed back as a download; none of their contents is transmitted. You can switch off Wi-Fi after the page has loaded and it keeps working.
