Memory Palace Help & FAQ

Most people who try a memory palace for the first time are surprised by how well it works - and then stall on the second week, when the images start to blur. This page covers both: how to get going, and how to keep your palaces clean as the lists get longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a memory palace, in one sentence?

A route through a place you can picture, with a fixed order of stops, where you leave one vivid image per item and later walk the route again to collect them. It is also called the Method of Loci - "loci" is Latin for places.

How do I start my first session?

Press Start Training on the home screen, pick the Method of Loci, a palace and a short list - five to ten words is a good start. The camera moves to each stop and tells you what to picture there. When the walk ends, the recall test begins. Use Repeat on the home screen to run the same setup again later.

What makes a good image?

Big, moving, a little absurd, and touching the object at the stop. "A diamond on the fountain" is weak; "a diamond the size of a football spinning in the fountain, spraying water everywhere and ringing like a bell" is strong. Add sound and smell - the more senses, the stronger the memory.

Why are the wrong answers so hard to rule out?

Because they come from your own walk. If you only remember that you saw a tree somewhere, every item from that session will look familiar. The test asks what was at a specific stop, so you have to know where each image was. That is what makes a score honest.

Which technique should I use for what?

For an ordered list, the Method of Loci. To recall an item by its number - "what was seventh?" - the Peg System. For a short list you only need once, the Story Method or Visual Chains. For numbers, dates and PINs, the Major System, and for long digit strings, PAO. Each technique has a guide in the app.

Can I reuse the same palace for a new list?

Yes, and memory athletes do it constantly. Old images fade within a day or two if you do not review them. If an old image keeps turning up, switch to another palace for the next session and come back later - with five palaces you can rotate.

What does Level Up do?

When you score 90% or more, the summary offers Level Up, which adds items to the next session. Longer lists are where the technique really shows its strength, so it is worth climbing gradually rather than jumping to the maximum.

How do voice guidance and music work?

Voice guidance narrates each stop and each recall question, so you can close your eyes while you picture. Background music is calm and lowers itself automatically while the narrator speaks. Voice guidance is optional, so you can train in silence or with music only.

What does the Pace setting change?

How long the walk lingers at each stop - Quick, Normal or Relaxed. Relaxed is a good choice for beginners and for anyone who prefers to take their time. Your memorisation time is recorded either way.

Is it accessible?

It supports VoiceOver and Reduce Motion, uses large readable text with clear focus for the Siri Remote, and offers optional narration of every stop and question.

What does Premium include, and is it a subscription?

It is a one-time purchase, with no subscription and no ads. Premium unlocks all five palaces, all six techniques, all twelve word packs, number training with the Major System and PAO, and sessions of up to 15 items.

How do I restore Premium on another Apple TV?

Sign in to that Apple TV with the same Apple Account you bought Premium with, open Settings in Memory Palace and choose Restore Purchases. It works on any Apple TV signed in with that account.

Which Apple TV models are supported?

Any Apple TV running tvOS 15 or later.

Does it collect my data?

No account is needed to train. What the app does and does not collect is set out in our privacy policy, which covers Memory Palace by name.

The Method of Loci on Apple TV: five 4K palaces, six mnemonic techniques and an honest recall test.

How-to guides

How to take your first walk

Ten minutes, one palace, ten words.

  1. Choose Start Training, then the Method of Loci and the Library Room - it has the most distinctive objects.
  2. Set the list to ten items and the pace to Normal or Relaxed.
  3. At each stop, look at the object first, then make the item do something to it. Do not move on until you can see it.
  4. At the end of the walk, close your eyes and walk the route once in your head before the test starts.
  5. Answer the recall test, then open the review to see which stops were weak.

Most beginners score far higher than they expect on the first walk. The real skill shows on day two: see whether you still remember the list tomorrow.

How to make images that survive the test

Weak images are the reason for almost every miss.

  1. Make it big - a mango the size of a car, not a mango.
  2. Make it move - spinning, exploding, melting, dancing.
  3. Make it touch the stop - the item has to be doing something to the fireplace, not floating near it.
  4. Add a sense other than sight - a sound, a smell, a temperature.
  5. If the item is abstract, turn it into something you can hold: "freedom" becomes a bird breaking out of a cage.

The app suggests what to picture at each stop. Treat it as a starting point and make it stranger.

How to learn the Peg System

Pegs let you jump straight to any number in a list.

  1. Open Techniques and read or listen to the Peg System guide.
  2. Learn the first ten rhyming pegs - one is Sun, two is Shoe, three is Tree, four is Door - until you can say them backwards.
  3. Run a peg session: each item is fused with its peg in one crazy image.
  4. In the test, go to the peg first, then look at what is stuck to it.
  5. When the first ten are automatic, move on to pegs eleven to twenty.

Pegs are reusable like palaces. Use a palace for long ordered lists and pegs when you need item number seven without counting.

How to start training numbers

Numbers are the hardest thing to remember raw and the easiest once they become words.

  1. Read the Major System guide: each digit is a consonant sound - 1 is T or D, 2 is N, 3 is M, 4 is R and so on.
  2. Browse the full 00-99 list in the app and learn ten words at a time.
  3. Run Major System sessions, where each number is shown with its word and placed at a stop.
  4. When the 00-99 words come without thinking, try PAO: every two-digit number also gets a person and an action.
  5. Combine three pairs into one image - one number's person doing the next one's action to the third one's object - and six digits fit on a single stop.

Number training with the Major System and PAO is part of Premium. See what the Major System is for the full code.

How to learn Spanish or French words with a palace

The article is part of the word - learn them together.

  1. Choose the Spanish or French pack at the difficulty you are comfortable with.
  2. Give every masculine noun one type of action and every feminine noun another - for example, masculine things catch fire, feminine things freeze.
  3. Place each word at its stop with that action, so the gender is part of the image.
  4. In the test, recall the image first; the action tells you the article.
  5. Repeat the pack a day later in a different palace.

How to build a daily habit

A few minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

  1. Pick a fixed moment - after dinner, before the evening show - and do one walk.
  2. Keep the list at a length you pass comfortably, and let Level Up raise it.
  3. Rotate palaces so yesterday's images do not get in the way of today's.
  4. Look at your day streak and personal bests on the home screen, not your worst scores.
  5. Once a week, try a new technique so the practice stays interesting.

Memorisation time is recorded for every session. Watching it drop while your score holds is the clearest sign the skill is growing.
