Frequently asked questions

Does the app need an internet connection?

No. All 27 tracks and all 15 scenes are stored in the app. Nothing streams, so a slow or busy connection during a party cannot make the music buffer or cut out.

Which songs are included?

Instrumental versions of well-known carols - Carol of the Bells, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Holy Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and more - along with calm piano pieces and cinematic holiday themes. Together they run for about 54 minutes, and every track has its own artwork.

How do I play everything without choosing songs?

Press Play All on the home screen and the whole collection runs. You can play it in order or shuffle it, and repeat one song or all of them.

What is Ambient Mode?

A full-screen mode made to be left on. Fifteen 4K Christmas scenes change on their own and drift slowly, so the picture never looks frozen. A large clock, the date and a countdown to Christmas sit in one corner, and the screensaver stays away while Ambient Mode is open.

How do I change the scene?

Swipe left or right on the Siri Remote. To change scenes automatically, choose an interval in Settings, from every 30 seconds to every 5 minutes.

Will Ambient Mode burn into my TV?

The app is designed to avoid it. The scenes drift slowly rather than standing still, and the clock and countdown move to the other side of the screen with every new scene, so no bright element stays in one place for hours.

What happens to the countdown after Christmas?

It switches to a countdown to New Year's Eve. If you only want the picture, you can hide the countdown, the clock, or both in Settings.

Can I play the music on a HomePod, AirPods or another speaker?

Yes. The current song appears in Control Center on your Apple TV, so you can send it to a HomePod, AirPods or any other speaker you already use with the Apple TV.

Does the music stop when I leave the app?

No. Music keeps playing when you leave the app, and the Play/Pause button on the Siri Remote works on every screen.

How does the sleep timer work?

Set it for 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes. When time is up the music fades out, the screen goes dark, and your Apple TV can then go to sleep on its own schedule.

Why does my screensaver not come on while music is playing?

By default the app keeps the screensaver away while music plays, so your scene stays on the TV. You can switch this off in Settings if you prefer the screensaver to come on as usual.

Can the music start by itself when I open the app?

Yes. Turn on Auto-play on Launch in Settings and the music starts as soon as the app opens. The app also remembers your other settings and opens the way you left it.

What are the colour themes?

Christmas, Winter Blue, Elegant Gold and Northern Lights. Pick one in Settings and it applies straight away.

What are the Now Playing layouts?

Full-screen Now Playing puts the track artwork across the whole TV behind the controls. The classic layout shows the cover and the controls side by side.

Can I turn off the snow or the lights?

Yes. Snow and the music-reactive lights each have their own switch under Visual Effects in Settings.

Are there ads or an account?

No ads, and no account or sign-in.

Which Apple TV do I need?

Any Apple TV running tvOS 17 or later. The scenes are shown in 4K on an Apple TV 4K connected to a 4K television.

How-to guides

How to set up the TV before guests arrive

Five minutes before the doorbell, and nobody needs to touch the remote again.

  1. Open Christmas Music & Carols 4K and press Play All.
  2. Turn on shuffle and repeat all, so the music never runs out.
  3. Open Ambient Mode.
  4. In Settings, set the scene to change every few minutes - often enough to feel alive, slow enough not to distract.
  5. Put the remote somewhere out of reach of small hands.

With repeat all on and Ambient Mode open, the scenes, clock and music look after themselves for the whole evening.

  2. Press and hold the TV button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center.
  3. Select the audio output control.
  4. Choose your HomePod, AirPods or other speaker.

The music keeps playing if you leave the app, so you can switch speakers at any time.

How to use the sleep timer at bedtime

Fall asleep in front of the tree without the music stopping with a jolt.

  1. Start the music, or open Ambient Mode.
  2. Click the remote to show the controls.
  3. Choose the sleep timer and pick 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes.
  4. When time is up, the music fades out and the screen goes dark.

The Apple TV then sleeps on its own schedule, set in the Apple TV's own Settings.

How to show just the picture

For a fireplace on the screen and nothing else.

  1. Open Settings in the app.
  2. Under Ambient Mode, turn off Show Clock.
  3. Turn off the countdown as well.
  4. Go back to Ambient Mode.

Scenes still drift and change, which keeps the screen moving even without the clock.

Open the app, and the room is already playing.

  1. Open Settings in the app.
  2. Under Playback, turn on Auto-play on Launch.
  3. Optionally turn on Keep Screen On While Playing, so the screensaver stays away.
  4. Next time you open the app, the music starts straight away.

How to change the colour theme

Four looks for the same Christmas room.

  1. Open Settings in the app.
  2. Choose a theme: Christmas, Winter Blue, Elegant Gold or Northern Lights.
  3. The change applies straight away.

Elegant Gold suits a dinner table; Northern Lights works well late in the evening with the room lights off.

How to look after an OLED TV during long sessions

Ambient Mode is designed for hours on screen, and a couple of TV settings help too.

  1. Keep the clock and countdown visible only if you want them - they move with every scene either way.
  2. Set scenes to change every few minutes rather than every five.
  3. Leave your TV's own pixel refresh and screen-shift features switched on.
  4. Use the sleep timer at the end of the night, so the screen does not run until morning.
