Frequently asked questions

Which events are ready when I first open the app?

Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day and major sports finals are already set up, so the grid is full from the first minute.

How do I see my countdowns on the Home Screen?

Move Event Countdown into the top row of the Apple TV Home Screen. Your next events then appear in Top Shelf with live day counts, and selecting one jumps straight to its countdown.

When does a card switch from days to hours?

The event cards show how many days are left. On the last day they switch to hours and minutes. Open any event for the full-screen countdown with days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Will the screen saver hide the countdown?

Not while the full-screen countdown is open - it keeps your TV awake, so the countdown stays on screen in the middle of a party.

What happens when an event has passed?

Yearly events renew themselves: when Christmas passes, the countdown to next Christmas starts automatically. One-off events stay in the list as past events until you clear them, which you can do in one step.

Which holidays can I add?

Public holidays for more than 200 countries and regions, in their local names, and world celebrations with verified dates: Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Diwali, Holi, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, Easter, Orthodox Easter, St. Patrick's Day and Halloween.

Which sports and shows are included?

Events for 2027 and 2028, including football finals, a world rugby tournament, a song contest grand final and the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027. Events with a set start time count down to the exact minute in your time zone.

Can I add my own events?

Yes - birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, vacations, concerts or anything else, with a category and optional notes. Past dates are flagged, so you never create a countdown that has already ended.

Can I hide the seconds?

Yes. Seconds and the gentle animations are both optional.

Which themes are there?

Seven: Auto, which follows your Apple TV's light or dark appearance, plus Midnight, Daylight, Aurora, Sunset, Ocean and Frost.

Which languages is the app in?

English, German and Spanish. You can switch the language in Settings.

What does Premium unlock?

Event Countdown is free to download. A one-time Premium purchase, with no subscription, unlocks unlimited countdowns, every event category, all seven themes, and background pictures for every event and on Top Shelf.

Where are my events stored?

Only on your Apple TV. There is no account, no ads and no tracking.

Which Apple TV do I need?

Any Apple TV running tvOS 17 or later.

How to add your own countdown

A birthday, a wedding, a trip - set up in a few clicks of the remote.

  1. Open Event Countdown and choose to add an event.
  2. Give it a name, for example "Trip to Bali".
  3. Pick the date with the Siri Remote. If the date has already passed, the app flags it.
  4. Choose a category so it gets the right full-screen picture, and add notes if you like.
  5. Save it. The new card appears in the grid with the number of days left.

How to put your next events in Top Shelf

See how many days are left the moment you turn on the TV.

  1. On the Apple TV Home Screen, highlight Event Countdown.
  2. Press and hold the clickpad until the icon jiggles, then move it into the top row.
  3. Press the clickpad again to drop it in place.
  4. Your next events now appear above the top row with live day counts.
  5. Select one to open its countdown directly.

How to add the holidays you celebrate

  1. Open the holidays list in the app.
  2. Choose your country or region - there are more than 200.
  3. Add the public holidays you want to count down to.
  4. Add world celebrations such as Lunar New Year, Diwali, Eid al-Fitr or Hanukkah, with verified dates.

How to run a countdown through a party

A big, clear countdown everyone in the room can read.

  1. Open the event - for example New Year's Eve - for the full-screen countdown.
  2. Leave it running. It keeps your TV awake, so the screen saver will not cover it.
  3. Turn seconds on in Settings for the final minutes.
  4. Pick a theme that suits the room, from Midnight to Daylight.
