Frequently asked questions

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad on iOS 17 or later, and Apple TV on tvOS 17 or later.

How many stories are there, and how long are they?

44 illustrated stories, written for ages 3 to 9. They are short enough for one night - most take about eight minutes to read.

What kinds of stories are in the library?

Five collections: animals, fantasy, dreams, adventures and classics. The classics are gentle retellings of Aesop, Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, alongside new stories written for bedtime. Nothing is scary.

Can a story be read in my own voice?

On iPhone and iPad, yes. If you have created a Personal Voice in your device's Accessibility settings and allowed the app to use it, you can pick it as the narrator, and the story is read in your voice.

Can I change the narrator or the reading speed?

Yes. Choose a narrator voice and set the reading speed in Settings. You can also download a premium system voice; once it is installed it appears in the list. Narration works with no internet.

Can I read the story myself instead?

Yes. Switch Read Stories Aloud off in Settings and the app shows the illustrated pages for you to read out loud.

What is read-along?

Each word brightens the moment it is spoken, so a child learning to read can follow the page instead of only listening. Turn it on or off with Highlight Words While Reading.

What are the lullabies?

Nine pieces of music box and classical sleep music that play as one continuous set, with a four-second crossfade between them so nothing stops abruptly.

What are the sleep sounds?

Rain, ocean, wind, stream, night hush and deep noise. They are generated live rather than played from a recording, so they never loop and never end.

How does the sleep timer work?

Choose ten to ninety minutes. Everything fades out over the last thirty seconds instead of cutting off. On iPhone the countdown is shown in the Dynamic Island, and it keeps running if you leave the app.

What is the dark screen?

While a story plays, the screen can go dark so nothing lights the room while your child falls asleep. The story keeps reading. Turn on Dim the Screen While Reading and choose how long to wait before it dims.

Can the pages turn on their own?

Yes. Turn Pages Automatically moves to the next page when the narrator finishes, so nobody has to touch the screen.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. Stories, narration, lullabies and sleep sounds all work offline.

Is there anything for parents to worry about?

No ads, no accounts and no tracking, and no scary moments in the stories.

What is free, and what does the purchase unlock?

Two stories, two lullabies and two sleep sounds are free to try. A single purchase unlocks the whole library, and you keep it. There is no subscription.

How-to guides

How to set up a bedtime routine with the app

A repeatable wind-down that ends on its own.

  1. Pick one story together; most take about eight minutes.
  2. Set the sleep timer for the whole evening, for example 30 minutes.
  3. Turn on Dim the Screen While Reading so the room stays dark.
  4. Let the story play, then let a lullaby or sleep sound carry on until the timer fades it out.

Keep the order the same every night. The routine is what tells a child sleep is coming.

How to have the story read in your own voice

Personal Voice, on iPhone and iPad.

  1. Open the device's Settings, then Accessibility, then Personal Voice, and create your voice.
  2. Allow apps to use your Personal Voice when asked.
  3. In Bedtime Stories, open Settings and choose your Personal Voice as the narrator.
  4. Play any story: it is now read in your voice.

Creating a Personal Voice takes a while the first time, because the device builds it from recordings you make. You only do it once.
