Frequently asked questions

When does a new door open?

One door opens each day of the calendar you have chosen. Top Shelf on the Apple TV Home Screen shows which door opens today, so you can see it before you even launch the app.

What can be behind a door?

Classic carols with sing-along lyrics, a game-show Christmas quiz, recipes to make together (gingerbread cookies, real hot chocolate, sugar cookies), Christmas traditions from Germany, Mexico, Iceland and Australia, stories to read aloud including "A Visit from St. Nicholas", surprising facts and Christmas quotes, and 4K scenes such as a snowy forest, northern lights and a crackling fireplace.

Which calendar dates can I choose?

December 1 to 24, all the way to Christmas Day, Orthodox Christmas from December 14 to January 7, or a date of your own. Pick the one your family celebrates.

Can I stop the children changing the dates?

Yes. Turn on the parental lock and the calendar settings stay the way you set them.

What is Christmas Mode?

A Christmas window for your TV: falling snow, the carols you have unlocked so far and a live countdown to Christmas. The screen saver stays off while it runs, which makes it good for dinner, wrapping presents or a quiet evening by the tree.

Can we open a surprise again?

Yes. Every opened door hangs an ornament on your Christmas tree, and you can open any surprise again from there whenever you like.

What changes in the village each day?

The village comes to life as the doors open: smoke rises from the chimneys, lamps and garlands light up, a snowman appears, and on the last day a star shines on the clock tower.

What is free, and what does the purchase unlock?

Doors 1 to 3 are free. A single in-app purchase unlocks the whole season, with no subscription and no ads. Seasons you unlock stay yours to revisit.

Which languages is it in?

The app is available in 10 languages.

Which Apple TV do I need?

Any Apple TV running tvOS 16 or later. The scenes are shown in 4K on an Apple TV 4K.

How to make opening the door a daily moment

The door is the easy part. The ritual is what children remember.

  1. Pick a fixed time - after breakfast, or when everyone is home in the evening.
  2. Let a different child open the door each day.
  3. If it is a carol, sing it together while the lines light up; if it is a recipe, pick a day to bake it.
  4. Look at how the village has changed since yesterday.
  5. Hang the ornament and check how full the tree is getting.

  2. Leave it running - the screen saver stays off while it is open.
  3. The carols you have unlocked so far play along with the falling snow.
  4. Press Menu on the remote when you want to go back to the village.

How to host a family quiz night with the quiz door

The game-show quiz works best with teams.

  1. Split into two teams that mix ages.
  2. Let the youngest player hold the remote and choose the answer the team agrees on.
  3. Keep score on paper and play best of three on quiz days.
  4. Finish with a round of your own from our family Christmas quiz questions.
