Rule one: it has to look boring
The worst prank is the one everyone is waiting for. If the TV is showing a horror film, your guests are braced. If it is showing a crackling fireplace with candles and rain on the window, they stop looking at it within five minutes - and that is exactly what you want.
Set the room up as part of the decoration. Lights low, a few real candles, the fireplace on the TV. Nobody suspects the fireplace.
Rule two: let it creep in
A sudden scare out of nowhere is a jolt. A scare that arrives after twenty minutes of something being slightly wrong is a story people tell for years. Let small things change first: a candle that goes out, a fire that sinks, a portrait that does not look quite the same. Guests who notice will doubt themselves. That doubt is half the fun.
The difference between those two kinds of fear is the subject of slow burn vs jump scare.
Rule three: pick the moment
- Not at the start. Wait until people are settled, talking and eating.
- When the room is quiet. A lull in conversation makes any sound twice as loud.
- When nobody is looking. The scare should pull everyone's eyes to the screen, not happen while they are already watching.
- Before people leave. A prank at midnight is a great ending; a prank after half the guests have gone is wasted.
Rule four: know your audience
A prank only works if everyone laughs afterwards. Before you plan a big scare, think about who will be in the room:
- Young children - keep it to gentle surprises. See how scary is too scary for kids.
- Anyone sensitive to flashing lights or with a heart condition - skip the loud, flashing version.
- Pets - sudden loud sounds can frighten them more than people.
When in doubt, tell one trusted guest what is coming, so someone is ready to laugh first.
Rule five: sound and light do the heavy lifting
A picture on the TV is only part of a scare. A whisper that seems to come from behind the sofa, or the room lights dimming at the same moment, makes it feel like the house itself is involved. See why sounds behind you are scarier and smart lights for Halloween.
A prank that runs itself
Haunted TV was made for exactly this. It starts as a cozy room on Apple TV and slowly turns into a haunted house. You choose the level - from family-safe Cozy to Nightmare - and when the first scare comes: in a few minutes, in an hour or two, or at midnight. Or press Play/Pause twice to strike early in secret. It can dim your HomeKit lights during the scare and bring them back afterwards, and every evening's haunting is put together differently.
