Frequently asked questions

How does CleanTwin find duplicate and similar photos?

CleanTwin scans your local photo library and groups images that look the same or nearly the same. It compares image content (visual similarity, dimensions, capture time, and metadata), so it catches both exact copies and burst-mode look-alikes that have slightly different data.

Is it safe to use? Will CleanTwin delete the original photo?

CleanTwin never deletes anything automatically. You review each group, the app suggests which copy to keep (usually the highest-resolution or most recent one), and you confirm before anything is removed. Deleted items go to the standard Recently Deleted album, so you can restore them within 30 days.

Does CleanTwin work offline? Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

Yes, CleanTwin runs fully on-device. Your photos are never uploaded to a server, never sent to a third party, and never used for training. The scanning model and comparison logic both run locally on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Does it work with iCloud Photos?

Yes. If iCloud Photos is enabled, CleanTwin works with the local copy of your library. When you delete a duplicate, the change is synced through iCloud the same way it would be if you deleted the photo manually in the Photos app.

Does CleanTwin support Live Photos, HEIC, and screenshots?

Yes. CleanTwin scans HEIC, JPEG, PNG, RAW, and Live Photos. Screenshots are detected as their own group so you can clean them in one pass. Live Photos are matched by their still frame, and the motion track stays attached to whichever copy you keep.

How much storage can I expect to free up?

It depends on your library, but a typical user has between 10% and 25% of their photo storage tied up in duplicates, near-duplicates, and similar shots from the same moment. Power photographers and parents who take a lot of burst shots usually see the biggest gains.

Can I undo a deletion if I change my mind?

Yes. Deletions go through the standard system Recently Deleted album. Open Photos, tap Albums, scroll to Recently Deleted, and recover any item within 30 days of deletion.

Is CleanTwin free? What is included with the paid version?

CleanTwin is free to download and includes a basic scan so you can see how many duplicates you have. The paid upgrade unlocks unlimited cleanup, similar-photo detection, and the smart "keep best" auto-selection. Pricing is shown inside the app.

How-to guides

How to find and remove duplicate photos on iPhone

Free up iPhone storage in a few minutes by clearing exact duplicates from your Camera Roll.

  1. Install CleanTwin from the App Store and grant access to your photo library when asked.
  2. Tap Scan on the home screen and let the app analyze your library on-device.
  3. Open the Duplicates section and review each group; CleanTwin marks the recommended copy to keep.
  4. Adjust the selection if you want a different keeper, then tap Remove to send the rest to Recently Deleted.
  5. Open Photos, go to Albums, scroll to Recently Deleted, and tap Delete All to reclaim the space.

On a 64 GB iPhone, this typically frees several gigabytes the first time you run a full scan.

How to clean similar photos and burst shots on Mac

Use the macOS app to thin out lookalike shots from the same moment without losing the best frame.

  1. Open CleanTwin on your Mac and let it index your Photos library (this can take a few minutes the first time).
  2. Choose Similar Photos in the sidebar to see groups of near-identical shots, like burst frames or repeated angles.
  3. Use the slider to control how strict the similarity check is - tighter for exact matches, looser to also catch reshoots.
  4. Click Auto-select best to let CleanTwin pick the sharpest, highest-resolution copy in each group.
  5. Review the suggestions, then click Remove. The deletions are mirrored to Recently Deleted in Photos.
