Frequently asked questions

How does AI upscaling work?

Traditional resizing just stretches existing pixels and the result looks soft. AI upscaling uses a neural network trained on millions of high- and low-resolution image pairs to predict the missing detail. The result keeps edges crisp and adds plausible texture rather than blurring.

What is the maximum output resolution?

SharpUpscale supports 2x, 4x, and (on supported devices) 8x scaling. From a typical iPhone photo, that easily reaches 4K and often 8K, depending on the source. Final size also depends on available memory on your device.

Which file formats are supported?

You can import JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and most common formats. Output can be saved as JPEG (small file size, good for sharing) or PNG (lossless, good for editing further).

Are my photos sent to a server?

SharpUpscale runs the upscaling model on-device for the standard models so your photo stays on your phone or Mac. If a cloud-only ultra-high-resolution option is offered, the app shows a clear notice before processing and you can opt out.

Does it work on faces and old family photos?

Yes. There is a portrait mode that prioritizes facial features (eyes, skin, hair) so old or scanned photos look natural rather than over-sharpened. For best results, crop tight around the face before upscaling.

Why did my upscaled image lose color or detail?

Two common reasons: the source was already very small (under ~200 pixels wide), or the wrong model was chosen. Try the General photo model for natural images, the Anime/Illustration model for drawings, and the Portrait model for faces.

How long does upscaling take?

On modern iPhones (A14 and newer) and Apple Silicon Macs, a 4x upscale of a 12 MP photo typically finishes in a few seconds. Larger inputs and 8x scaling take longer and use more battery.

How-to guides

How to upscale a photo to 4K with SharpUpscale

Get a high-resolution version of any photo for printing, posters, or zoomed-in cropping.

  1. Open SharpUpscale and tap Upscale Photo.
  2. Pick a source image from your library or take a new one.
  3. Choose the General Photo model and the 4x scale option.
  4. Tap Process and wait for the on-device model to finish (usually a few seconds).
  5. Compare with the slider, then tap Save to add the upscaled image to your Photos library.

Starting from a 12 MP iPhone photo, 4x scaling reaches roughly 4-5x more pixels along each side - more than enough for 4K screens or prints up to A2.

How to enhance old or scanned family photos

Restore detail in photos that look soft, faded, or low-resolution.

  1. Scan the printed photo with the iPhone camera or import an existing scan.
  2. Open SharpUpscale and choose Restore Photo (or Portrait if there are faces).
  3. Crop tight around the subject so the model focuses its work where it matters.
  4. Pick a 2x or 4x scale and run the model.
  5. If the result looks too smooth, lower the strength slider and reprocess for a more natural finish.
