How is this different from checking storage in System Settings?

macOS tells you how much is used by broad category. DiskSpace draws the whole disk as an interactive size map, so a forgotten 40 GB folder is visible at a glance rather than inferred.

Does it delete things automatically?

No. It finds and shows - large files, duplicates, and what is inside them via Quick Look preview - and you decide. Nothing is removed without an explicit action.
