Frequently asked questions

What are the controls?

Drive forward or back, and lean in the air. On the ground the gas and brake move you; in the air, leaning tilts the vehicle so it lands on its wheels. It works with the Siri Remote or any game controller.

Why do I keep flipping over?

Usually too much throttle over a crest or on a steep climb. Full throttle lifts the front wheels until the vehicle goes over backwards. Ease off before the top, lean forward in the air and land with the nose slightly down.

Why did I stop just short of the finish?

You ran out of fuel. The tank is always running, so grab the fuel cans along the route and plan your speed. Every vehicle shows its fuel range in the garage, and the fuel system upgrade adds range per tank.

Which game controllers work?

The Siri Remote, and any game controller that pairs with Apple TV - for example an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth or a PlayStation DualShock 4 or DualSense. Pair it in the Apple TV Settings app under Remotes and Devices.

How does the career work?

There are 40 contracts across five tours: reach a distance, collect coins, hit a top speed, land a long jump or finish with fuel to spare. Each completed contract earns a license star, and stars open new routes and vehicles.

What happens when I finish the career?

You can take on the repeatable Master License runs on the hardest routes in the game, and replay any event you have already finished for extra coins.

What do the upgrades do?

Each vehicle has five upgrades, each up to level 5: engine for top speed, drivetrain for acceleration, offroad tires for grip, suspension for stability and a fuel system for more range per tank.

Which vehicle should I start with?

Heavy trucks climb like tractors, which makes them a calm place to learn. Light bikes fly, and the school bus is a challenge of its own. Every vehicle has its own weight, grip, speed, suspension and fuel economy, so try a few.

Can I turn down the effects?

Yes. Camera shake, weather and particle effects are adjustable in the settings.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Career, coins and upgrades are saved through iCloud, so your progress follows your Apple account.

What is free, and what does Dirt Climb Pro add?

Start free with two vehicles, two routes and the first four contracts. Dirt Climb Pro is a single one-time purchase that unlocks every vehicle, every route, the full career and every upgrade level. There are no ads, subscriptions, energy timers or coin packs.

Does Dirt Climb collect any data?

No. Dirt Climb collects no personal data and contains no tracking.

Which Apple TV do I need?

Any Apple TV running tvOS 16 or later.

How-to guides

How to get over a steep crest without flipping

The most common way a run ends.

  1. Build speed on the flat before the climb.
  2. Ease off the gas as the front wheels start to lift.
  3. Lean forward slightly to keep the nose down on the steepest part.
  4. Lift off completely just before the top, so you do not launch off it.
  5. If you do leave the ground, lean to match the slope you will land on.

How to land a long jump

Long jumps are worth coins and complete contracts - if you land them.

  1. Hit the ramp straight and at a steady speed, not at the very top of the throttle.
  2. In the air, watch the slope you are flying towards.
  3. Lean so the wheels are parallel to that slope.
  4. Touch down with both wheels at once, then get back on the gas.

Why parallel matters: how to land a jump.

How to make a tank of fuel go further

A sloppy run leaves you rolling to a stop just short of the finish.

  1. Check the vehicle's fuel range in the garage before you start.
  2. Drive at a steady pace rather than flat out, and plan where you will slow down.
  3. Plan your speed around the fuel cans on the route.
  4. Upgrade the fuel system for more range per tank.

More in throttle and fuel on a climb.

How to spend coins in the garage

Five upgrades per vehicle, each up to level 5.

  1. If you keep flipping, upgrade suspension for stability first.
  2. If you lose grip on climbs, upgrade the offroad tires.
  3. If you run out of fuel, upgrade the fuel system.
  4. Save engine and drivetrain upgrades for contracts that ask for top speed or a long jump.
  5. Replay finished events for extra coins when you need more.
