Frequently asked questions

How does Sonic Water Eject actually work?

The app plays a low-frequency tone through the speaker. The vibration of the speaker membrane pushes water droplets out of the speaker grille. This is the same idea Apple Watch uses with its Water Lock feature.

Is it safe for my iPhone or AirPods speaker?

Used at sensible volume (around 70 to 90% of max), the technique is safe for modern speakers. Avoid running it at maximum volume for long periods, since prolonged loud playback wears any speaker faster, water or no water.

Will this fix water damage inside the phone?

No. The app only clears water that is sitting in the speaker chamber. If liquid has reached the logic board, USB-C/Lightning port, or microphone, you need to power down the device and let it dry. Persistent issues need a service visit.

My speaker still sounds muffled after one cycle - what now?

Run the cycle two or three times with the device tilted speaker-side down so gravity helps. Wait a minute between cycles. If it is still muffled, leave the iPhone in a dry, room-temperature place for a few hours and re-test.

Does it work on AirPods, Apple Watch, and iPad?

Apple Watch has its own Water Lock that does the same thing - use that first. For iPad and AirPods, the app helps but the case design varies, so results depend on how the water is trapped. AirPods especially benefit from being held with the speaker mesh facing down.

Should I put my phone in rice?

No - rice is a popular myth. It does not absorb water faster than open air, and rice dust can get into ports. Open air at room temperature, with the phone off and the ports facing down, dries faster and is safer.

Why does the tone sound unpleasant?

Low frequencies in the 100-200 Hz range are most effective at moving water but also least pleasant to the ear. Lower the volume slightly and put a little distance between you and the device while it runs.

How-to guides

How to remove water from your iPhone speaker

Clear a muffled iPhone speaker in under a minute after exposure to water.

  1. Wipe the outside of the iPhone with a soft, dry cloth. Do not insert anything into the speaker grille.
  2. Open Sonic Water Eject and pick the iPhone Speaker preset.
  3. Hold the phone with the speaker pointing toward the floor.
  4. Tap Start and let the cycle run all the way through (around 15-30 seconds).
  5. Stop the cycle, gently shake the phone speaker-side down, and listen to a short audio clip to confirm the sound is clear again. Repeat once or twice if needed.

If the iPhone has been fully submerged, also turn it off and let it air-dry for a few hours before charging.

How to clear water from Apple Watch or AirPods

Both have small speaker openings where water can sit after a workout or shower.

  1. For Apple Watch, swipe up on the watch face, tap the Water Lock droplet icon, and turn the Digital Crown to start the built-in eject cycle.
  2. For AirPods or AirPods Pro, hold the bud with the speaker mesh facing down and gently tap it against a clean dry cloth.
  3. Open Sonic Water Eject on your iPhone and pair the AirPods.
  4. Run the AirPods cycle and let the tone play through the buds while they are speaker-side down.
  5. After the cycle, leave the case open and let the buds air-dry for an hour before reusing.
