Frequently asked questions

Do ultrasonic and high-frequency tones actually repel mosquitoes?

The honest answer: scientific evidence is mixed, and effectiveness varies by species and environment. Some users report a noticeable reduction in bites. Treat the app as a complement to other measures (screens, fans, repellents), not a guaranteed solution.

Is it safe for people, pets, and babies?

At normal phone volume, the tones are within the range a typical phone speaker can produce safely. Children and many pets (especially dogs and cats) can hear higher frequencies than most adults, so they may be more aware of the sound. If a pet looks distressed, lower the volume or turn the tone off.

Will the high-frequency tones damage my hearing?

At reasonable volume the risk is low. As with any audio, prolonged playback at very high volume close to the ear can be uncomfortable or harmful over time. Keep the device a few feet away and use moderate volume.

Why does the sound seem silent to me but my child reacts?

Hearing range narrows with age. Most adults stop hearing tones above 15-17 kHz, while teenagers and children can often hear up to 18-20 kHz. The "mosquito tone" presets are deliberately in that upper range.

Can I run this in the background while I sleep?

Yes, but use the lowest volume that you find tolerable. Place the device on a table rather than next to your head, and consider setting a sleep timer.

Will my iPhone speaker really emit 17 kHz - 20 kHz cleanly?

Modern iPhone speakers can play tones into the upper kHz range, but output level falls off at the very top of the spectrum. The app picks frequencies that real-world iPhone speakers can reproduce reasonably well.

Does it work outdoors?

Outdoor performance is much weaker because sound disperses quickly and wind affects propagation. The app is best used in small to medium indoor spaces, like a bedroom or a porch with limited airflow.

How-to guides

How to use ultrasonic mosquito sounds at night

Set up the app for sleep without keeping yourself awake.

  1. Open Anti Pest & Mosquito Sound and pick the Mosquito preset.
  2. Place your iPhone on a nightstand a few feet from your head, face down.
  3. Set the volume so the high frequency is just barely audible to you - if you cannot hear it at all, raise it slightly until you can confirm it is playing.
  4. Enable the sleep timer (for example, 1 or 2 hours) so the app stops automatically.
  5. Combine with a fan or screened window for the best result.

If you have a pet that reacts to the sound, lower the volume or move the device to another room.

How to test which frequency works in your home

Different rooms and devices have different acoustic profiles. Find what sounds clean.

  1. Open the Frequency Sweep mode in the app.
  2. Hold the iPhone at arm's length and let the sweep play through the range.
  3. Listen for any rattle, distortion, or sharp drop in volume - those frequencies are weaker on your speaker.
  4. Pick a clean tone in the upper range (typically 16-19 kHz) as your default.
  5. Save it as a favorite preset so you can start it with one tap next time.
